Chance Cooper’s newest series is almost ready to leave the studio!

Cooper built his name on crowd-scapes: black-and-white paintings of people gathered at sporting events. That’s changing. Color came first, replacing the monochrome palette. Then the subject narrowed, from the crowd down to the individual competitor. It started with golf.
“The golf pieces were meant to show how the game is played against no one but yourself,” Cooper says. “That’s why the players are singled out and painted at the angles they are.” The tennis paintings go a step further, putting two recognizable faces on canvas for the first time: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. “I wanted to make the characters more recognizable, and paint two kings in the sport who I watched growing up into the person I am today,” he says.

For Cooper, sport has always been the throughline. “I love the mystery of them, the storylines, the metaphors of life, and at the same time, the escape from the real world” the same instinct that’s shaped his work since he first picked up a brush.
