Remembering Country Music Legend & BMI Icon Dolly Parton

We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dolly Parton today at the age of 80. Known globally as the Queen of Country, our longtime #BMIFamily led a remarkable career as a singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist and businesswoman built on vivid storytelling, sharp business instincts and a lifelong commitment to lifting others up.

Across a seven-decade career consisting of 50 studio albums and over 100 million albums sold worldwide, Parton composed more than 3,000 songs and retained full ownership of her publishing catalog. Affiliating with us in 1962, she earned 37 BMI Awards across pop and country. Her catalog produced timeless, multi-generational hits including “Jolene,” “9 to 5,” and “I Will Always Love You,” which topped the country charts twice for Parton before becoming a massive international hit for Whitney Houston. 

Parton’s accolades include 11 GRAMMY Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award, 10 CMA Awards, the Kennedy Center Honors, the National Medal of Arts, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and inductions into the Country Music, Songwriters, and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.
