Seattle is taking a chance that most teams probably weren’t willing to take

The Seahawks have signed former Lions first-round pick Terrion Arnold, giving the 24-year-old cornerback another opportunity in the NFL while a serious legal situation continues to play out.

From a pure football standpoint, you can understand why Seattle would be interested. Detroit traded up to select Arnold 24th overall in 2024 after he established himself as one of the best defensive backs in college football at Alabama. He went on to start 22 games over two seasons for the Lions before everything changed this summer.

Now he gets a fresh start in Seattle, but this is obviously much bigger than football. Arnold is facing multiple felony charges stemming from an alleged incident this summer. Those are allegations, not convictions, and the legal process is still ongoing. The NFL is also placing him on the Commissioner’s Exempt List, meaning he can attend meetings and remain around the Seahawks facility but cannot practice or play while on the list.

That puts Seattle in a very unusual position. They’re adding a young former first-round talent who they clearly believe still has football upside, but there’s currently no guarantee when, or even if, he’ll actually be available to help them on Sundays. Mike Macdonald said Seattle thought highly of Arnold during the draft process and acknowledged the seriousness of the situation while allowing the legal process to play out.

It’s a gamble with a ton of uncertainty attached to it. If everything eventually gets resolved and Arnold is cleared to return, Seattle could potentially have landed a talented 24-year-old corner for very little. But considering everything surrounding the situation, plenty of people will understandably question whether signing him was worth it in the first place.
