Prime Colin Kaepernick was different

People remember everything that happened later in his career, but sometimes it feels like they forget just how dangerous he was when he first took over in San Francisco. At his peak, Kap gave defenses a problem they weren’t used to dealing with. He had a cannon for an arm, could attack vertically, and once he escaped the pocket, a broken play could turn into a 40-yard gain before the defense even knew what happened.

That 2012 run was special. He took over during the season and helped lead San Francisco all the way to Super Bowl XLVII. Then came that legendary playoff performance against Green Bay where he ran for 181 yards, setting an NFL playoff record for a quarterback at the time. Dude was moving like a running back while still being capable of launching it downfield. And those 49ers teams were MUST-WATCH football. Kap, Frank Gore, Vernon Davis, Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, plus one of the nastiest defenses in football. San Francisco felt like a problem every single week.

That’s why all the “next Kaepernick” comparisons never really made sense to me. Trey Lance had the athletic profile and the physical tools, but prime Kap actually proved it on the biggest stages. There’s a massive difference between having similar traits and actually doing what Kaepernick did. Prime Kap was absolutely ELECTRIC. You had to be watching it live to understand the hype.
