Ed Reed didn’t just play safety. He played quarterback against the quarterback

He’d bait you into thinking a receiver was open, read your eyes, break on the ball and somehow be standing exactly where you never expected him to be. And once he got the interception? Good luck. Reed wasn’t looking to just secure possession. He was trying to take it all the way back. The range was ridiculous. The instincts were different. The ball skills were elite. QBs had to know where No. 20 was before every single snap, and even then, that didn’t mean they were safe. 64 career interceptions. 7 defensive touchdowns. 9 Pro Bowls. Defensive Player of the Year. Hall of Famer.

There have been plenty of great safeties, but very few players have ever controlled the back end of a defense the way Ed Reed did. At his peak, I’m not sure there’s a safety I’m taking over him.
