JMU football started its 2026 fall camp on Aug 5. Here are the key takeaways from coaches and players at the opening press conferences of the season. 

Summer conditioning 

The heart of Lockwood’s training is building a foundation and seeing it transfer to the field. 

“I don’t want them to just be weight room strong,” Lockwood said. “The biggest thing is, I want to answer the question of ‘does it transfer?’ and ‘how do we do that?’” 

Returning redshirt senior defensive lineman Kells Bush said Lockwood “didn’t just try to put a lot on [the team]” all at once.

“Every week we slowly crept up,” Bush said. “Once we hit 100 miles per hour, we just stayed there.”

Lockwood’s favorite part of working with the team has been “set[ting] the table for them to have the best season of their careers,” he said.
