39 years ago today, Michael Jackson released ‘Bad.’

Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson co-produced 'Bad,' Jackson's seventh studio album, released through Epic Records nearly five years after the massive success of 'Thriller.' Recording stretched across more than three years, beginning with early demos in late 1983, pausing for the Victory Tour and Captain EO work, and finally wrapping in July 1987 after extensive sessions at Westlake Studios and Jackson's home studio in Encino. It marked Jackson's third and final collaboration with Jones, who has said he specifically pushed Jackson toward writing nearly the entire record himself, feeling it was time for an honest, deeply personal project as pressures in Jackson's life continued mounting.

Jackson ended up composing nine of the album's eleven tracks and took a co-producer credit across the whole project, exploring themes of media bias, paranoia, racial profiling, romance, self-improvement, and world peace. The record featured guest appearances from Siedah Garrett and Stevie Wonder, and its title track's accompanying video, directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring an early Wesley Snipes role, became one of the most celebrated visuals of Jackson's career, drawing inspiration from 'West Side Story.' Nine of the eleven songs eventually became singles, with five hitting number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Commercial reception was massive worldwide: the album topped the UK Albums Chart, sold 500,000 copies there within its first five days, and eventually moved an estimated 35 million copies globally, making it one of the best-selling records ever released. It earned six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year, ultimately winning Best Engineered Album, and its success cemented Jackson's continued dominance following 'Thriller,' launching his first-ever solo world tour in support of the record.
