Halsey wrote every song on 'BADLANDS' at just 19 years old, releasing her debut studio album through Astralwerks with Norwegian producer Lido serving as the main creative force behind the sound, alongside a wider team that included Tim Anderson, Captain Cuts, and The Futuristics. The record leans into electropop, dark pop, and synth-pop textures with industrial undertones, drawing loose inspiration from post-apocalyptic films like 'The Fifth Element.' Halsey has said that after writing the first few songs, she realized the fictional dystopian wasteland she'd invented was really a metaphor for her own mental state.

That concept shaped the entire project: Halsey described the Badlands as a fictional society surrounded by a desert wasteland, keeping its inhabitants captive, framing the album as a way of escaping real struggles while still holding onto hope that somewhere else exists beyond the walls. She revealed the album's central theme via Twitter in December 2014, and the record's twelve original tracks were preceded by early singles 'Ghost' and 'New Americana,' along with promotional cuts 'Hold Me Down' and 'Drive.' Halsey has since said the album deliberately lacked a conventional radio hit, favoring atmosphere and narrative over easy commercial appeal.

'BADLANDS' debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 with 115,000 first-week units, eventually earning double-platinum certification from the RIAA and reaching the top ten in countries including the UK, Canada, and Australia. It was supported by Halsey's first headlining world tour, the Badlands Tour, and its lasting significance carried forward nearly a decade later, when she recreated the album's cover art in 2024 as part of the rollout for her fifth studio album, 'The Great Impersonator.'
