28 years ago today, Lauryn Hill released ‘The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.’

A pregnancy with her partner Rohan Marley's child, combined with her recent departure from the Fugees, pushed Lauryn Hill toward crafting her debut solo album, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,' released through Ruffhouse and Columbia Records. Recording stretched from September 1997 through June 1998 across studios in New York, Miami, London, and Kingston, Jamaica, with Hill herself producing alongside Che Pope and Vada Nobles. She deliberately favored live instrumentation over slick, overproduced arrangements, drawing the album's title from Carter G. Woodson's 'The Mis-Education of the Negro' and the film 'The Education of Sonny Carson.'

Blending neo soul and R&B across 77 minutes, the record explored themes of love, faith, and self-discovery through Hill's dual gift for singing and rapping, arriving just weeks after lead single "Doo Wop (That Thing)" had already shot to number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Critics responded with near-universal acclaim, praising Hill's artistic range and her deeply personal perspective on womanhood, and the album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with first-week sales around 422,600 copies, a SoundScan record for a female artist's debut week at the time.

At the 41st Grammy Awards, Hill earned ten nominations, the most ever for a woman in a single year, and walked away with five wins including Album of the Year, making 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' the first hip-hop album ever to claim that top honor. The record has since sold more than eight million copies worldwide, landed at number ten on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, and remains widely credited with helping push hip-hop and neo soul into the mainstream of popular music.
