At 2,800 metres, the air is thin, the light is flat, and the High Polar Plateau stretches endlessly. Beneath it, the ice runs nearly five kilometres deep.

Here, we overnight at Dixies Camp en route to the South Pole. A place so isolated, your nearest neighbour could be aboard the International Space Station.
