When you look at a foldable phone, the hinge might seem like a simple mechanism that just lets the device open and close.

But inside the Galaxy Z Fold2, Samsung packed an incredibly complex system into a tiny space.

The hinge has more than 60 individual components, all working together to control how the phone folds.

And the crazy part?

This tiny mechanism has to perform its job thousands of times without damaging the flexible display.

The hinge doesn't just connect two halves of the phone.

It has to provide smooth movement, maintain alignment and help protect the delicate internals every time the phone opens and closes.

Samsung's hinge design also uses a system that helps prevent dust and debris from easily entering the hinge area, while controlling the movement of the display as the phone folds.
