There's one company that doesn't make the world's most advanced chips... but makes the machines that make them possible. 🧠⚙️

That company is ASML.

Based in the Netherlands, ASML builds some of the most complex machines ever engineered: lithography systems used by semiconductor manufacturers to create incredibly tiny patterns on silicon wafers.

At the center of its most advanced technology is EUV — Extreme Ultraviolet lithography.

EUV systems use extremely short-wavelength light to help print the microscopic patterns needed for leading-edge semiconductor chips.

And the scale is almost impossible to imagine.

Modern chips can contain billions of transistors, packed into an area smaller than a fingernail. Creating those structures requires extraordinary precision.

ASML's EUV machines combine high-powered lasers, microscopic tin droplets, ultra-precise optics, vacuum systems, advanced software, and thousands of other components.

Even the EUV light has to be generated in an incredibly complex process.

A laser hits tiny droplets of molten tin, creating plasma that produces the required extreme-ultraviolet radiation.

That light then travels through a vacuum and is manipulated using specialized mirrors because EUV light is absorbed by ordinary glass and even by air.

The machines are so complex that ASML relies on a huge network of specialized suppliers and technologies to build them.

And here's why this matters:

ASML doesn't manufacture the chips inside your smartphone, GPU, laptop, or AI data center.

Instead, its machines are a critical part of the manufacturing process used by leading chipmakers such as TSMC, Samsung, and Intel.

Without advanced lithography, producing the smallest and most powerful semiconductor features becomes dramatically more difficult.
