Google has been hit with billions of dollars in antitrust penalties and multiple major rulings against its business practices. ⚖️💰

For years, regulators around the world have been asking one question:

Has Google become too powerful?

Google dominates areas of the digital economy including search, advertising, Android and app distribution.

That dominance has made it incredibly successful — but it has also attracted intense antitrust scrutiny.

In the United States, a federal court found Google unlawfully maintained a monopoly in online search. The U.S. Department of Justice later won significant remedies designed to open parts of the search market to competitors.

Google is also facing a separate U.S. antitrust case involving digital advertising technology, where the government alleges that Google monopolized key parts of the ad-tech market.

And Europe has been taking action too.

In July 2026, the European Commission fined Google €890 million for two Digital Markets Act violations — including self-preferencing Google's own services in Search and restricting how app developers could direct customers toward alternative purchasing options.

That came after years of other European competition cases involving Google's Android ecosystem, search and advertising businesses. In July 2026, the EU's top court also upheld the core findings in Google's major Android antitrust case.

So this isn't simply about one fine.

It's about something much bigger:

How much power should one company have over the digital economy?

Google argues that its products succeed because people choose to use them and that competition remains strong.

Regulators, meanwhile, argue that certain practices can make it harder for competitors to gain a foothold.

And that's why these cases matter far beyond Google.
