Today, we are crowning congresswoman Bella Abzug as our #QueenoftheWeek 👑

This Women’s Equality Day, we’re celebrating the woman who made August 26 a day to remember. In 1971, she introduced a resolution to designate August 26 as Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the certification of the 19th Amendment and women’s constitutional right to vote. Congress approved the resolution, creating an annual observance that continues today.

Known as “Battling Bella,” Abzug was a lawyer, activist, and three-term U.S. congresswoman who spent her life fighting for equality and social justice. Born in the Bronx to Russian-Jewish immigrant parents, Abzug grew up in New York City and went on to study at Hunter College and Columbia Law School.

In Congress, she championed women’s rights, civil rights, LGBTQ+ rights, peace, and economic equality. She co-founded the National Women’s Political Caucus to help get more women into elected office. She was a leading figure in the development of ecofeminism, co-founding the Women’s Environment and Development Organization (WEDO).
