Today, as we celebrate Dr.SylviaEarle's birthday, we look back to the unforgettable moment when the legendary oceanographer and #NatGeoExplorer at Large made history off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii. In 1979, Earle plunged 1,250 feet (381 meters) beneath the ocean's surface in her rigid JIM suit, studying the ocean floor for more than two hours. Exploring at this depth, which no human had done before, earned Earle the nickname "Her Deepness."
