The Wall Street Journal recently reported on the increasingly intense race for vintage clothing, first-edition books, furniture and other finds—with some sales attracting hundreds of shoppers.

My advice? Let everyone else fight over the obvious stuff. I’m looking at the light fixtures, digging through the garage and checking behind every door.
