When Christopher Nolan personally went to Caine’s country home with the script for Batman Begins, Caine initially thought he was being offered a typical butler role. Nolan explained that this Alfred was much more than that. He was Bruce Wayne’s mentor, protector, and essentially the father figure who helped raise him after losing his parents.

Sometimes, the role you’re offered isn’t what you think it is. And sometimes, what looks small from the outside carries the greatest purpose.
