Doug Ford fired back by unveiling a massive bilingual sign at Fifty Point Conservation Area near Grimsby reading, “Lake Ontario. Now and Always.” The sign measures 24 by 12 feet and stands approximately two storeys high. Ford said Trump can call it whatever he wants, but insisted the lake’s real name will outlast his presidency. The name “Ontario” dates back centuries and originates from the Wendat language, commonly interpreted as “lake of shining waters.” Canadian and Indigenous leaders have condemned the change as an attempt to erase the lake’s history, while some U.S. political leaders have also rejected the new name. Google Maps has officially changed Lake Ontario to “Lake America” for users in the United States after Donald Trump ordered the new name for U.S. federal use. Canadians will still see “Lake Ontario,” while users outside Canada and the U.S. may see both names. Google says it follows official government sources when naming geographic features.
