The term “scoping” gets tossed around a lot in the horse world, but what does that actually mean?
Scoping refers to an endoscopy, which is a when a long, flexible tube with a camera is used to view a horse’s internal respiratory and digestive structures.
One of the most common endoscopic procedures is a gastrsocopy, which looks at the horse’s digestive system and is is often used to identify gastric ulcers as well as other gastrointestinal issues. Scoping helps veterinarians detect issues earlier and diagnose them accurately, leading to more effective treatments.
In this case, the patient was displaying symptoms consistent with gastric ulcers, so Dr. Slovis opted to scope. The gastroscope findings were clean, allowing the team to rule out ulcers as the cause of this horse’s discomfort.
