💔 The voice behind Optimus Prime for more than four decades has gone silent, as legendary voice actor Peter Cullen has died at age 85.

Cullen passed away peacefully at his Los Angeles home on August 26, surrounded by his family.

He first gave Optimus Prime his unmistakable voice in the original 1984 Transformers animated series, establishing the sound and personality that generations of fans would associate with the Autobot leader.

Cullen later returned for the live-action Transformers era beginning with Michael Bay’s 2007 film and continued voicing Prime through multiple movies, including 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.

His incredible career went far beyond Optimus, with roles including Ironhide, Eeyore, the evil KARR from Knight Rider, King Kong, and even the creature vocal effects for the Predator.

The voice of Optimus was famously inspired by Cullen’s older brother Larry, a U.S. Marine veteran who encouraged him to portray a true leader with strength, dignity and compassion rather than as an exaggerated action hero.

That approach helped make Optimus Prime feel less like a cartoon robot and more like the calm, commanding leader millions of fans grew up admiring.

Even during Transformers’ 40th anniversary celebrations, Cullen remained inseparable from the character, appearing alongside fellow original cast members as Hasbro celebrated four decades of the franchise.
