🛞 California just approved the nation’s first replacement-tire efficiency rules, and Goodyear warns roughly 70% of today’s replacement tire options could fail to meet the new standards if they aren’t redesigned.

Starting in 2029, most replacement tires for passenger cars and light trucks sold in California will have to meet new rolling-resistance requirements intended to improve fuel economy and EV range.

The standards get even stricter in 2033, although manufacturers have years to update existing tire designs before those limits fully take effect.

California estimates the rules will add about $6 to the cost of a set in Phase 1 and $26 in Phase 2, while saving a typical gasoline-car driver around $179 in fuel over the life of a set.

State officials say the program could ultimately save California drivers nearly $1 billion per year in gasoline and electricity while cutting CO₂ emissions by roughly 2 million metric tons annually.

For enthusiasts, the big concern is whether chasing lower rolling resistance could reduce tire choice or affect the grip and performance characteristics drivers actually care about, which is one reason the 70% figure has exploded online.

However, this is not a blanket ban on performance tires: California created separate treatment for ultra-high-performance tires and exemptions for categories including competition, large off-road, and certain winter-performance tires.

The CEC also disputes the idea that 70% of tires will simply disappear, arguing that compliant products already exist and manufacturers have until 2033 to redesign models that currently miss the target.
