Norway's King Harald V has died aged 89, after being hospitalized last week with a rare blood disorder.

The monarch died peacefully at Oslo's national hospital early Friday morning, with members of his family at his side in his final hours.

Harald had spent 35 years on the throne and was widely regarded as a modernizing and unifying figure who helped reshape Norway's monarchy.

He will be succeeded by his son, Crown Prince Haakon.
