Rescuers are racing to reopen the main corridor to Gyirong Port in southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region after Wednesday's mudslide cut off road access to the disaster zone.⁣

At least 16 people have died and 546 remain missing in Gyirong, while flash floods from the same disaster have killed 781 people and left nearly 2,500 missing in Nepal, authorities said Sunday.⁣

Rescue progress has been slow due to the difficult terrain. The work site lies in a deep gorge surrounded by sheer cliffs, leaving limited space for heavy machinery. Large sections of the roadbed have also been washed away, with some areas completely hollowed out and buried under thick mud and debris.⁣

Heavy rain, low temperatures and dense fog further hampered rescue and search efforts on Saturday. ⁣

Multiple rescue teams, accompanied by search-and-rescue dogs, have been deployed to conduct grid-style searches, working alongside manual search teams to locate missing people.⁣
