If she’s not volunteering at So Others Might Eat, a DC-area food bank, you might find 14-year-old Charlotte Walsh deep into the pages of Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. Or listening to Taylor Swift. Or maybe, just maybe, competing at the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

After correctly spelling words like “rescissible,” “anilox,” and “sorge,” the word “daviely” (meaning “listlessly”) snuck up on the 8th grader from Merrifield in Fairfax County. Walsh won first runner-up in the 2023 competition, which came with a $25,000 prize. When she grows up, Walsh plans to pursue either astrophysics or neuroscience.
