The Canada-U.S. relationship is under strain after trade talks collapsed last weekend. The U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods. "Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on Trade," Trump said.

Ottawa is responding with retaliation and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said negotiations are suspended. He added U.S. demands were unfair and would have boxed Canada in on autos in future trade deals. President Donald Trump threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, parts and steel next year.

The new levies affect a relationship worth hundreds of billions of dollars and extend far beyond consumer stereotypes, touching major sectors including autos, steel and lumber, along with a large two-way market.
