In Dolly We Trust 🕊️

If you’ve felt unexpectedly emotional with the news of Dolly and all the tributes flooding our feeds, you’re not alone.

I can’t stop crying, and I’ve been thinking about why.

I’ve always adored Dolly. Since moving to Texas, I’ve fallen in love with her even more. She is everywhere there, and somehow her spirit just gets under your skin. Her spunk, her tenacity, her beauty, her kindness, that unforgettable laugh. She was just one of the best.

I’m not even a Hallmark-movie-watching girl 😂 but if I happened to catch a Dolly movie, I would watch it. Even when it was wonderfully cheesy. I loved that she didn’t seem to care. If something brings you joy, who cares what anyone else thinks?

And maybe that’s what has me thinking so much about her now.

The strength to remain soft.

Because the world can be incredibly cruel. I’ve experienced enough cruelty in my own life to understand how tempting it can be to harden. To stop trusting. To stop giving. To protect yourself by closing your heart. But I’m learning that strength isn’t becoming cruel because someone was cruel to you. It’s becoming wiser without losing your kindness. It’s having boundaries without losing compassion. Protecting your heart without closing it. Remaining gentle without becoming naive.

Sometimes softness is what remains after you’ve survived enough to have every reason to harden.

And maybe that’s why people like Dolly touch us so deeply. They remind us of the parts of ourselves we don’t want the world to take.

Our joy. Our kindness. Our generosity. Our ability to laugh. Our humanity.
 

Maybe you’re remembering. Maybe you’re grieving a time, a feeling, a version of yourself. And maybe that’s just being human. 🤍
