Cabo Verde mourns the passing of Bino Branco, born Carlos Alberto Pereira Lopes, one of the most important voices and cultural figures in the history of Ferro Gaita.

Bino Branco passed away in the United States on Aug. 29, 2026, after a long battle with cancer. 

For more than three decades, Bino Branco helped carry the sound of our islands to the world. As a singer, composer and master of the ferrinho, he helped create the powerful rhythm that made Ferro Gaita one of the most influential groups in Cape Verdean music.

In his hands, the ferrinho was more than an instrument. It was identity. It was resistance. It was memory. It was the heartbeat of funaná.

Bino Branco helped preserve our roots while inspiring generations to celebrate where they come from. His voice, his presence and his music will forever remain part of Cabo Verde’s story.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends, fellow musicians, Ferro Gaita and everyone who loved and admired him. 🫂
