He was imprisoned in 1953 due to Stalin's anti-Semitic campaigns, and Shostakovich himself wrote πŸ–‹οΈ to the feared head of the KGB for the release of Weinberg, ultimately succeeding. The Trumpet Concerto was written in 1967, and some say that it was written in a similar tone as Shostakovich's own unrealized composition for trumpet and orchestra that he attempted in his 20s.
