On July 27, 1991, VfB Stuttgart hosted Inter Milan in a pre-season friendly at the Neckarstadion in Stuttgart. The fixture brought Jürgen Klinsmann back to face his former club, having transferred from Stuttgart to Inter in 1989, while Matthias Sammer anchored the midfield for VfB Stuttgart during their build-up to the 1991–92 Bundesliga championship season.

​Following Stuttgart's 1991–92 Bundesliga title win, Sammer moved to Serie A ahead of the 1992–93 season to join Inter Milan. His arrival coincided with the departure of Klinsmann, who left the Nerazzurri that same summer to sign for AS Monaco. Sammer’s spell in Milan was brief, registering 11 appearances and 4 goals before returning to Germany with Borussia Dortmund in January 1993.
