The Day the System Subbed the Soul: Sacchi vs. Baggio. June 23, 1994, Arrigo Sacchi made the most polarizing tactical choice in World Cup history. After goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca was sent off in the 21st minute against Norway, Sacchi substituted the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, Roberto Baggio.
The decision sparked a 32-year debate. Sacchi defended the move as a strict technical necessity, arguing that a 10-man block required high-intensity runners to stretch Norway's deep defensive line and protect the midfield. Baggio's disbelief captured the romantic view of football: you do not hook your ultimate match-winner when tournament survival is on the line. While Sacchi’s pragmatism secured the vital 1-0 win, it was ultimately Baggio’s individual genius that dragged Italy through the knockout stages to the final.
Match Statistics:
June 23, 1994, Giants Stadium, 74,624 attendance, 21st minute red card, 1-0 final score, 69th minute goal.

The Substitution: To bring on backup goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani, manager Arrigo Sacchi strategically substituted off star forward Roberto Baggio in the 22nd minute.
The Result: Despite playing down to 10 men, Italy won the match 1-0 following a 69th-minute goal by Dino Baggio.

"Who? Me?
This is crazy"

Roberto Baggio

"Why him and not someone else?
For a simple technical matter. I needed people who ran a lot and a striker who would "stretch" the opposing team by starting in space, without the ball. The Norwegians had been deployed in such a way as to crush us, so I needed someone who attacked the space deep in order to move the opponent's defensive line away from their midfielders. I needed a striker who started by opening holes in their defense system and distancing the defenders so that we could put one of our players between the lines."

After 32 years, which side are you on?
