If your growth goal is too small, your best reps have nowhere to go.

Founders often set modest revenue targets without realizing what that decision does to their sales org. Going from $500K to $1M, or $2M to $5M, sounds reasonable. But that size of growth rarely creates enough new leadership seats to matter.

The problem isn't ambition. It's math. Advancement opportunities — team lead, sales manager, regional roles — only exist if the org has to get bigger to hit the goal. A small goal means a small team, which means almost no path up for the reps you're trying to keep.

This matters most for retention. Your best salespeople aren't just chasing commission. They're watching for a ceiling. If they can see there's no room to grow into leadership, they'll eventually look for that opportunity somewhere else.

Look at your current revenue goal and ask what org chart it actually requires. If the answer is "basically the same team, just selling more," you don't have enough built-in advancement to keep top performers excited long term.
