My passion for Bentley motor cars is well known but what isn’t known is that there is another brand of car that I have loved since the age of 18 - when I had a ride in a Morgan Plus 8 owned by a friend of my father.

Morgan has been building cars in Malvern, England since 1910 and is famous for its traditional construction, using an ash-wood body frame over a metal chassis.

The classic Morgan shape evolved with the 4/4, introduced in 1936, and the company then deliberately retained and gradually evolved its unmistakable pre-war-inspired design for generations through cars such as the Plus 4 and Plus 8 - powered by the legendary Rover V8 engine that grew from 3.5 litres and 160bhp to 4.6 litres and 220bhp.

The Plus 8 only weighed approx. 900kg so with the V8 engine the car was lively.

Then in 2000 Morgan introduced the radically different Aero 8, combining its traditional hand-built character with modern aluminium construction, BMW V8 power and contemporary performance, effectively bringing Morgan into the 21st century while retaining the individuality that made the marque unique.

For me the Aero 8 cabriolet in the pictures accompanying this post, with its long bonnet (hood), long front wings and that gorgeous boat tail rear end, is the most beautiful Morgan ever designed.

In my brand Emerald Green with a matching green folding roof, gunmetal grey wheels and cream leather upholstery this car is stunning.

With a BMW 4.8 Litre 367bhp engine the Aero 8 sprints from 0-60mph (0-100km/h) in approx. 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of 170mph (274km/h).

One of these is also planned for my Swiss garage and will have the 6-speed stick shift (manual) gearbox.

Much more fun to play with on an Alpine pass filled with hairpin bends than an auto box.
