Capcom’s foundational fighting game Street Fighter debuted in 1987 on custom coin-operated arcade hardware, launching in Japan on August 30, 1987, before arriving in North America in December 1987. The original release featured only two playable characters, placing Player 1 in control of the Japanese martial artist Ryu while Player 2 competed as his American rival, Ken Masters.
