I think we take for granted that the world we want to see will wait for us.

We think the place we’ve always wanted to visit will still be the same in five or ten years when we finally take the time to visit. That the animals will still be there. That the landscape will look the same. 

But the world doesn’t stay still while we make plans for “someday”.

There are versions of places that people older than me got to experience that I’ll never see. (Oh how I wish I got to experience Thailand & Bali in the 80’s!) There are places I visited ten years ago that I couldn’t experience in the same way today. And I know there are things I’m seeing now that won’t exist in exactly the same way forever.

That doesn’t mean frantically ticking countries off a list because everything is disappearing. It just means I’ve stopped treating “later” like it’s a guarantee. And just really appreciating the hell out of everything I get to experience right now! 

If there’s somewhere you genuinely dream about seeing, and you have the means and opportunity to go, don’t assume the version of it you’re dreaming about will wait for you.

You’re not the only thing that changes with time. The world does too.

When I’ve been thinking about future trips I’ve started considering things I never used to back when I started travelling: climate change, conservation, disappearing habitats, overtourism, political instability, whether somewhere might become harder to visit or fundamentally different in the years ahead. I look at what’s happening to the Amazon. I think about the future of Taiwan. I think about wildlife populations and landscapes that are changing within our lifetime. 

It feels slightly bleak to admit that “will I still be able to experience this in ten years?” has become part of how I choose where to go, but it genuinely has.
