This summer, Mark John ’27 participated in the University at Buffalo Eric Pitman Summer Program for Computational Science, a workshop in which he studied and analyzed mathematical and computational models and simulations related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

The culmination of the program saw John and Abhi Ayodhya of Boston make a presentation entitled “Pump Malfunctions and Optimization.” They discussed the optimization of data related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as an overview of current insulin-producing medical devices such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors.

The bulk of the data and information in the presentation was derived from the UB Medical Center in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. 

John’s participation in the program was recommended to him by CHS science teacher Scott Walters. The week-long workshop is held annually in honor of Eric Pitman, a standout student who was a freshman at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute when he passed away on February 27, 2007 after a brief illness. 

From UB’s description of the program: “It is with Eric’s sense of wonderment and inquisitiveness in mind that the workshop strives to introduce students into the application of computer modeling and simulation to solve important problems in science and engineering.”

Past workshop topics have included computational chemistry and visualization; this year’s focused on bioinformatics and research in the life sciences.

Participants are encouraged to invite teachers and mentors to the presentation; John’s presentation was attended by school counselor Dr. Mark Veronica (pictured with John) and math teacher Joe Zera ’01.
