🐢🥚 In 2025, the Turtle Conservancy successfully hatched 25 Ploughshare Tortoises - the first successful breeding of this Critically Endangered species outside Madagascar. 🇲🇬 

16 years ago, rewild partner turtleconservancy rescued adult Ploughshare Tortoises from smugglers and brought them to their California-based conservation center. Now they plan to release these offspring back to their natural habitat in Madagascar. 

Fewer than 100 Ploughshare Tortoises are found in the wild today, remaining in a remote corner of northwestern Madagascar. Prized for their striking golden shell, decades of poaching for the illegal wildlife trade have devastated the wild population, nearly driving this species to extinction. 

Conservationists in Madagascar and around the world have worked to ensure this didn’t happen. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust has led conservation breeding efforts in Madagascar, while the Turtle Conservancy has worked with Durrell and other partners since 2009 to support the protection and recovery of the species. The Ploughshare Tortoise is now at the heart of the phoenixspeciesproject, a $200 million global effort by rewild and the bezosearthfund to recover 100 species facing extinction.

For a species pushed so close to extinction, 25 new hatchlings represent something much bigger: a chance to recover!
