Free doula support just hit a major milestone in New York City, and it's expanding.

The Citywide Doula Initiative has now served more than 4,200 people since 2022, with a focus on Black and Latino families, people in shelters or foster care, and teen parents. Mayor Mamdani says this is only the beginning, with six hospitals just completing a new doula friendly training program and city employee coverage launching in 2027.

Doula support is linked to better birth outcomes, something that matters deeply given the maternal health disparities Black families face.
