From playing quarterback on The Farm to leading Stanford Football as its head coach, Tavita Pritchard is bringing more than football knowledge back to Stanford. He is bringing his Samoan heritage with him. 

With roots from Leone, Nu’uuli, and Samatau, Coach Pritchard shared how the Samoan concept of “teu le vā” shapes the way he leads. The concept speaks to nurturing, caring for, and valuing the space and relationships between people.

For Coach Pritchard, “nurturing the vā” means being intentional about building strong spiritual, emotional, and relational connections between his players and staff. He believes those relationships help create a stronger team and, ultimately, a team that is tougher to beat.

Tonight is especially meaningful. Coach Pritchard takes the field for his first game as Stanford’s head coach, leading the Cardinal against Hawai‘i during Stanford’s Pacific Islander Heritage Game.

From once wearing the Stanford uniform as a quarterback to now leading the program from the sideline, this is a beautiful full-circle moment rooted in culture, connection, and teu le vā.
