A new MIT Media Lab study is going viral for a scary headline: using ChatGPT for 4 months caused a 47% decline in brain function.

The real study is more specific than that.

Researchers compared 54 people writing essays with ChatGPT, a search engine, or no digital help at all, while tracking brain activity with EEG.

The ChatGPT group showed the lowest neural engagement during the task. They also had more trouble recalling parts of what they had just written.

The researchers linked that to cognitive offloading. When the model does the planning and idea generation, the brain does less of the heavy lifting.

This does not mean ChatGPT damages your brain. The sample was small, the task was essay writing, and the paper is about engagement during the work, not permanent decline.

What it does suggest is this: if you hand the thinking over too early, you remember less and engage less with the work.

Use AI as a partner after you have started thinking, not as a replacement for the first draft in your head.
