Don’t make this mistake while trekking in Annapurna Base Camp.

Most people start their descent from ABC around 8–9 AM.

We started at 11 AM.

That itself wasn’t the biggest problem. The real problem was that some of us were walking slowly, taking frequent breaks, and eventually we lost a lot of time.

By evening, we should have stopped at Dovan.

But we thought… “Bamboo is just two hours away. We’ll make it.”

We were wrong.

Somewhere between Dovan and Bamboo, the weather suddenly changed. The sky turned dark, clouds rolled in, and within minutes, it felt like the entire jungle had disappeared into darkness.

Then came the rain.

Heavy, relentless rain.

The trail turned into slush and mud, and because it was pitch dark, we could barely see where we were stepping.

Then the thunderstorms started.

The sound was so loud it felt like it was exploding right above us. Every thunderclap gave us goosebumps.

And the scariest part?

There was nobody around.

No trekkers.
No guides.
No lights in the distance.

Just us, somewhere deep inside a dark jungle, trying to find the trail to Bamboo.

And then my friend suddenly said he had seen a tail moving in the jungle.

A leopard? Some other animal?

We had no idea.

At that point, we weren’t trekking anymore.

We were just walking, praying that Bamboo would appear before something else did.

Eventually, we made it.

But that night taught us something I’ll never forget:

A jungle that feels peaceful and beautiful during the day can become an entirely different place after dark.

So if you’re trekking in ABC or anywhere through a jungle, don’t let “just two more hours” convince you to keep going after sunset.

Sometimes the safest decision is simply to stop.

Would you still trek in a jungle aftersunset?
