When life gets busy and the world moves fast, sometimes it helps to pause and take in the view of our lovely blue marble—whether it be from the ground or in orbit. This photo was taken from the ISS above western Kazakhstan, just after the Sun had dipped below the horizon.

See that haze at the top of the photo? Those are noctilucent clouds, the highest-altitude clouds in our atmosphere. They form when low temperatures freeze water vapor in the mesosphere, the layer of Earth’s atmosphere that is 31-50 miles above the ground. These clouds are easier to see from space than from Earth’s surface.
