Recovery is built through connection, compassion, and community. Throughout National Recovery Month, we're featuring Caring for Denver grantees whose work is expanding opportunities for healing and long-term recovery across Denver. 

Grantee Spotlight: Sidewalk Poets

Sidewalk Poets uses the power of creative writing, storytelling, and the arts to help people heal, build resilience, and strengthen their mental well-being. Through trauma-informed workshops, participants explore their experiences, process difficult emotions, discover confidence, connection, and a renewed sense of purpose.

With support from Caring for Denver, Sidewalk Poets partners with Mile High Behavioral Healthcare to provide eight-week creative writing and storytelling workshops for individuals engaged in Denver’s Specialty Courts and navigating recovery from substance misuse and mental health challenges. Participants engage in writing, discussion, and visual art in trusted treatment settings, creating supportive communities where they can share their stories, build healthy coping skills, and strengthen their recovery. The program also develops peer leaders with lived experience who help facilitate future workshops, further expanding healing through community.

By creating spaces where every story is valued, Sidewalk Poets is helping Denver residents transform lived experience into resilience, belonging, and hope.
