In 1894, Mark Twain visited Nikola Tesla’s laboratory in New York and became part of an experiment that looked almost like science fiction. Twain is holding an experimental vacuum lamp that could glow without being connected directly to a conventional power source. Tesla’s high frequency apparatus created rapidly changing electromagnetic fields, inducing electrical energy in a nearby wire loop that powered the lamp.

This was an early demonstration of wireless energy transfer, showing that electricity could be transmitted through electromagnetic fields rather than simply carried through a physical wire. The photograph was later published in The Century Magazine in an article describing Tesla’s experiments.
