Why I built Buzz City Hoops.

I’ve spent 25+ years in leadership, across coaching, business, and social psychology, working with some of the biggest organisations in the world before turning that expertise toward youth sport. And I’ve watched the same story play out in youth sport more times than I can count:

A kid gets overlooked. Not because they’re not good enough because the system isn’t fair. Politics. Favouritism. Who your parents know.

And here’s what most people don’t realise: that moment doesn’t just cost a kid a season. It writes a story in their head about who they are. “I’m not good enough.” That story doesn’t stay on the court. It follows them into the classroom, the workplace, every room they walk into for the next 20 years.

I built Buzz City Hoops to break that cycle.

Merit based. Transparent. Every kid knows exactly what earns them a spot and every kid gets a fair shot at earning it.

Because when effort actually leads to outcome, kids learn something that no amount of talent alone can teach them: that they are in control. That hard work pays off. That setbacks are something you push through, not something that defines you.

My ability as a leader isn’t measured by trophies. It’s measured by resilience, accountability, and self-confidence the things that stay with these kids long after they’ve stopped playing. I don’t set out to build followers. I set out to build leaders.

And here’s the thing, I’ve got 3 teenagers of my own, none of them in basketball. This was never self-serving. I’m not building this for my own kids to benefit from. The only thing I want them to take from it is what they see: passion, respect, and hard work, modelled, not preached.

That’s not just coaching. That’s building the kind of confidence that shows up 20 years from now, in the adults these kids become.

I would love you and your family to join us at Buzzcity, and to have the opportunity to create a positive impact, and teach valuable lessons.
