Thinking of Nepal ❤️‍🩹 

Our photo of the month captures the serene beauty of the Gokyo Lake in the Khumbu Region of Nepal. Set against the towering peaks of the Himalayas, the calm turquoise glacial lake stands in contrast with the drifting clouds above, capturing the delicate balance between water, air, and ice in one of the world’s most climate-sensitive regions. 
 
“Often called the Third Pole, the Himalayas are vital to global water systems, and this scene serves as a quiet yet powerful reminder of their beauty and vulnerability amid a changing climate”, says photographer Gudrun Hubinger. 
 
Across the Hindu Kush Himalaya, rising temperatures are altering glaciers, snow conditions, mountain slopes, while increasing the risk of Glacial-Lake Outburst Floods — the sudden release of water from a glacial lake. The recent flood tragedy in Nepal highlights the cascading and cross-border effects that such glacial lake outbursts can have, particularly on the downstream communities. 
 
Sustained investment, international data exchange, satellite observations and timely detection of hazards in such alpine regions are vital to provide #EarlyWarningsForAll and protect lives and livelihoods.
