National Treasure 3 is now in development, with director Jon Turteltaub saying Nicolas Cage is onboard to return as Benjamin Franklin Gates nearly 20 years after National Treasure: Book of Secrets.⁠

Speaking during a live recording of the National Treasure Hunt podcast, Turteltaub said: “It's happening. You're the first people I have said this out loud to. It's finally real.”⁠

A script has been written and approved by both Turteltaub and Disney, while producer Jerry Bruckheimer is also said to have given it his blessing.⁠
