“It takes 11 guys to have a good football play,” head coach Dave Doeren said after his team’s opening-day flop. He was sticking up for his benched quarterback, and reminded everyone that “it’s always going to be the head coach and the quarterback” who face the most flak when things go south. 

It’s an impressive way to make a situation that is already entirely about him even more about him. Unless the head coach is one of the 11 guys on the field — that might explain some of the defensive reps on Saturday. 

Those reps raised plenty of questions — including whether or not it would be more fun to lose 34-8 in Brazil or Charlottesville — but none of them were posed to Virginia’s seriously ancient offensive line. 

Anyway. Women’s soccer has won six games in a row, men’s soccer is stealing talent from European academies and some highly-touted freshmen have already forced their way into the starting volleyball lineup. It’s not the best time for NC State sports, but it is far, far from the worst.
