Vanderbilt remained unbeaten on the season, sweeping Maryland in straight sets in the first-ever meeting between the two programs, part of the inaugural Big Ten/SEC Volleyball Challenge Week, a new partnership between the two conferences.

The two programs had never faced each other before this matchup, part of a week-long event pairing all 18 Big Ten schools against all 16 SEC schools, culminating in a historic outdoor doubleheader at Wrigley Field the following weekend. Vanderbilt's win improved the Commodores to 3-0 on the season, continuing the momentum from a perfect opening weekend that saw sweeps of both Charleston and Memphis at home.

The loss dropped Maryland to 1-1 on the young season, following an opening sweep of Howard. Vanderbilt continued the Challenge Week slate the very next day at home against Rutgers, while Maryland moved on to face Arkansas, also at Memorial Gymnasium in Nashville.
