2002 SEC Championship Game: No. 22 Arkansas 3, No. 4 Georgia 30
Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA. December 7, 2002

Mark Richt's Georgia Bulldogs claimed the program's first SEC title in 20 years, routing the Arkansas Razorbacks 30 to 3 in front of a crowd of 74,835 that was heavily tilted toward the Bulldogs, just 75 miles from the Athens campus.

The matchup itself was unusual before it even kicked off. Alabama had finished atop the SEC Western Division standings, but an NCAA probation stipulation barred the Crimson Tide from postseason play, opening the door for Arkansas, which won a three-way tiebreaker over Auburn and LSU, to represent the West instead.

Once the game started, there was little suspense. Fourth-ranked Georgia scored on its first five possessions, building a commanding 23-to-0 halftime lead and never allowing Arkansas back into the game. Quarterback David Greene threw for 237 yards and a touchdown, earning game MVP honors, while Terrence Edwards hauled in seven catches for 92 yards, a total that made him the SEC's career leader in receiving yards. Placekicker Billy Bennett added a career-long 55-yard field goal for good measure. Arkansas' only points came on a Marvin Jackson punt return score that was actually erased by the final margin, with the Razorbacks managing just a field goal on the day against Georgia's defense, which had ranked among the SEC's best all season.

Georgia's win came on a day already tinged with what-if for the Bulldogs faithful. Top-ranked Miami had jumped out to a big lead over Virginia Tech earlier that day and rolled to a 56- 45 win, clinching a spot in the national title game against Ohio State and officially ending any national championship hopes Georgia had been holding onto. Coach Mark Richt said his team briefly worried the news might deflate his players, but Georgia responded by taking care of business in Atlanta. The win capped a 13-1 season, Georgia's first conference championship since Vince Dooley coached Herschel Walker to glory two decades earlier, and sent the Bulldogs into the Sugar Bowl with the SEC crown finally back in Athens.
