“It’s like inhabiting a Japanese landscape painting,” says Danish architect Bjarke Ingels (bjarkeingels) of the roughly 323,000-square-foot resort on Japan’s Sagishima Island, where his #AD100 design firm BIG (big_builds) recently completed three vacation villas.

Designed for hospitality brand NOT A HOTEL (notahotel_official), the three villas follow the island’s dramatic topography with curving forms, rammed-earth walls, and boundless indoor-outdoor spaces overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. Inside, Scandinavian and Japanese design traditions meet through exposed wood, natural materials, tatami-inspired floors, and a calming palette drawn from the surrounding landscape.
